Let Your Pet Take Care of You

From Singles, The Magazine for Today's Single

If you live alone, a pet may be the perfect roommate. True he won’t pitch in with the rent or clean up after himself, but he will offer you an unconditional love and loyalty that no human companion ever could. And you will find that the benefits of dog or cat ownership will quickly outweigh any inconvenience or work involved.

For a single person living alone, a dog or cat can play an important and needed role in your life. Your pet will be your constant companion; you’ll always have someone to go to the park with. You will be the mother and father to your pet, with the advantage that you won’t have to save up to send him to college. A pet is your playmate, your best friend, your roommate, and more.

We can all learn a thing or two from our animals. Because we have so many different kinds of relationships with animals, they can help us understand all of those same relationships with humans. Perhaps a dog or a cat will teach you about the nature of love or how to reach out and connect with other living beings; they can help you in your search for unity in all your relations--lessons all worth learning.

It has been proven that cat and dog owners are healthier than other people. In fact, research done has even convinced some insurance companies to lower their rates for pet owners. The stroking of a dog or a cat is not only how that animal receives love as well as your scent, but it is also rewarding for you. The friendly and regular physical contact of a pet actively reduces stress; body systems become markedly calmer; and it eases tension and relaxes the body (of both you and the animal). The nonverbal contact with an animal is important for your own well-being and nearly impossible to experience with humans.

Studies have shown that interacting with pets is more beneficial to our blood pressure levels than interacting with friends, because even friends are perceived as being judgmental. Pets will accept us, no matter what we say. There is a simplicity and purity in the love of an animal. Sigmund Freud, a dog lover himself, has been recorded as saying that "dogs love their friends and bite their enemies, quite unlike people, who are incapable of pure love and always have to mix love and hate."

Owning a pet has benefits that go beyond just the physical. There are psychological benefits in our pet relationships that cannot be found in human relationships. A person’s relationship with his or her pet is a simple and honest one; it lacks any complexities and betrayals. It is a contradiction of human relations; it is a relief to know that such a connection is possible.

Pets can help ward off depression, a common occurrence among people who live alone, by decreasing feelings of loneliness and isolation, as well as increasing its owner’s ability to cope. In a book written by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, entitled Dogs Never Lie About Love (available at Barnes and Noble http://www.bn.com  there is a quote of Fritz von Unruh that says "the dog is the only being that loves you more than you love yourself." So not only will a pet help you understand your human relationships, but it may also help you understand the most important relationship there is and that is your relationship with yourself. A pet can teach you that you are worth loving if that is a lesson you need to learn.

It is nice and comforting to know that someone in this world needs you and depends on you even if that someone is four-legged and furry. We all want to feel needed sometimes because it gives us something to live for. When you come home from work every night he will be there waiting, and he will be so happy to see you even if you’re late. Plus, poles have shown that people who live alone with a pet feel safer and more secure in their homes.

Unfortunately, our society does very little to encourage or support the integration of pets into a person’s lifestyle. "No pets allowed" is a recurring message in public places. But in Western Europe dogs are treated like family. You can bring your family pet on the train but only if he has a ticket. Your dog can go into a restaurant with you as long as he sits quietly. You can take your dog shopping if he’s on a leash. It seems that in Europe more than just pet owners understand how important and special dogs and cats are in their humans’ lives.

Walk into any pet supply store, in America or abroad, and you will realize the important role pets play in their owners’ lives. You can buy doggie seatbelts and kitty condos. Animals are prescribed Prozac to help combat depression. There are doggie day care centers and kitty bed-and-breakfasts across the country. All of these things exist because dogs and cats are not simply "common" house pets. No, they will become an irreplaceable part of your family.

The Delta Society  http://www.deltasociety.org  is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving human health, independence, and quality of life using animals. Visit their website to learn even more ways that pets can improve your health, or how animals are used in treatment at hospitals and nursing homes. You can purchase books on the website including What You Already "Knew" - Fluffy and Fido Are Good for You, and The Value of Pets for Health and Recovery, and more.

A new website is being developed at  http://www.petsource.com/PETSAS.HTM  The site is dedicated to pets as companions for people living alone. There are already some articles posted on the website, and more will definitely be added soon.

If you want to adopt a dog or a cat it should not be a step taken lightly. It is important that you are aware of the commitment and responsibility required in pet ownership. The Humane Society of the United States http://www.hsus.org has information about determining if your lifestyle could support a pet. If you’ve made the decision to adopt The Humane Society can also help you to decide what kind of pet to get and where the best place is to adopt in your area.
