Meditation for our GS Lenten Meditation Book - 2005

Psalm 37 Verse 1 - 18

When I saw Psalm 37 on the list of scriptures to be included in our Lenten bulletin, I grabbed it before anyone else, as it is my very favorite of all the Psalms, especially the first 2 verses (from the King James version).

"Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb."

A couple of years ago I was feeling overwhelmed with mounting problems and picked up my Bible for inspiration and hope. It fell open at Psalm 37 and as I read the first 2 verses an image came into my head of God, looking like Old Man Time with a long beard and a long white robe flowing behind him, but instead of a sickle in his hand, he pushed a huge lawn mower across a field, mowing the bad guys down and cutting them off at the ankles.

It may not be the most pious of images but it raised my Spirits to the ceiling, and higher, and as I read on and saw all that God would do for us, my problems seemed to just melt away. I still feel bouyed up every time I read that Psalm and am encouraged to be patient, because one of these days the tables will be turned on my "evildoers". It says in Verse 13 "The Lord shall laugh at him; for he seeth that his day is coming" so God is going to take care of them for me, in a bigger way than I ever could. I am satisfied, for as verse 16 says "A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked".

Thanks be to GOD!
