Meditation for our GS Lenten Meditation Book - 2006 Mark 7:24-37 In Jesus' time if anyone had ever had doubts about the authority of Jesus, their doubts would disappear if they had been present when he performed the healings in the gentile territory of this passage. While on a journey in gentile territory, when a gentile woman approached Jesus asking for healing of her daughter, He hesitated saying 'Let the children (God's chosen believers) be satisfied first; it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs (Gentiles)' Her answer 'Sir,' she replied, 'even the dogs under the table eat the children's scraps' impressed Him with her belief and persistence, and He told her to return home and she would find her daughter healed, which she did. On his journey back form that territory, He healed a man who was deaf and dumb and everyone was astonished and spread the word everywhere, even though he asked them not to. When Jesus spoke to his disciples about healings, he told them to go and do the same, and that even greater miracles and healings would happen in the future. It is as He said. Miracles and healings have continued to happen, for which we should be constantly thankful. They may happen differently than in Biblical times, but they do happen, from the medical advances that cure illnesses, to unexplainable things in our own lives. Like my sister, who had been told that she would never be able to have children, but she had a son and a daughter, each of whom had twins, and my own daughter who had been told she would not be able to have children, yet she gave birth to my only grandchild - a boy, now grown and in college, who continues to nurture his spiritual life with a college course on Revelations and the Book of John.
